Woodworking Tools: Lots to Choose From!
There
are many types of tools available to woodworking enthusiast, ranging
in many shapes, sizes and prices to help you great any number of
projects in your very own workshop or garage. There are several main
categories of tools, with innumerable specialty tools in each that
can be used for those tiny details that your plans require.
Saws
comprise a category of tools that are used to cut wood into various
shapes. Table saws are one type -- a basic saw that is absolutely
necessary in any sort of serious woodworking. They can be used for a
variety of needs, such as crosscuts, ripping (cutting against the
grain of the wood), dadoing (a technique necessary for joinery), and
wood shaping (when used with a special attachment).
Another
interesting type of saw is the band saw which is used for cutting
curved shapes. Any plan the requires curves cut into the wood
requires the use of a band saw, such as when making furniture
details such as clawed feet on a table. The jig saw is very similar
to the band saw except that it utilizes substantially smaller blades
to handle more in depth projects. The jigsaw puzzle gets its name
from this tool as the small blades are necessary to create the
detailed shapes in the puzzles.
A final
type of saw is the compound miter saw which is used to make precise
angled cuts across boards. When making cabinetry, for example, this
type of saw would help create the crisp corners necessary for a
beautifully finished piece. If you need baseboard molding or chair
rails to add a special touch to your home, it can be done with the
use of this saw.
Another
category of tools are bench drills which are used to bore holes for
setting wood screws or pegs for traditional woodworking projects.
This drill allows the home woodworker to drill to a specified depth
and can be converted using a special attachment to a mortising
machine that can drill square holes, which are called, obviously,
mortises.
There are
also numerous types of hand-held drills that can be used in
situations where large table-mounted drills would not be practical.
Inside one’s house or other enclosed or difficult-to-access places
require the use of one of these types of drills. If you want to hang
shelves and large pictures that require wall anchors, you can use a
handheld drill.
A final
category of tool are belt sanders which have a variety of different
uses. Used for very rough sanding, they save the woodworker from
hurting his or her hands using the traditional method of sanding
with simply sandpaper. They are necessary when creating a nice
finish to wood pieces. Also, if you want to add an even more
finished touch, you must sand before adding varnish or other
coating.
There are
innumerable types of tools available to create any sort of
woodworking project that you wish. Tools are available on the
internet and from local and national chain hardware stores. There
are certainly very reputable service people at each store that can
certainly help you pick out the best tool or tools that you need to
finish your project.
