Venetian Plaster:
For the most part, interior plaster
is in the form of gypsum plaster,
which has been around and used for
centuries. There is a wide and
varied range of systems available
which extend anywhere from simple
and functional to aesthetic and
ornamental. Venetian plaster is
relative to this, although it is a
lime plaster as opposed to a gypsum
plaster and is for the most part
associated with Italy. This form of
plaster comes in a paste or putty
form, and can usually come from
various regions across Europe.
Like many other traditional
plastering techniques, Venetian
plaster achieves its overall effect
with a combination of unique
materials and skilled application.
The recipe for Venetian plaster is
actually built on a mix of aged
slaked lime, ground marble dust, and
pigment.
Venetian plaster can be applied to
many different substances, and works
by hardening over a long period of
time by absorbing carbon dioxide
from the atmosphere in a process
which is known as recarbonation.
Venetian plaster is a good technique
to use if you are looking for a
design that includes something
besides paint or wallpaper. This
plaster is more durable than a
painted surface, and the actual
creativity and uniqueness of it is
therefore only limited by the
application of the artist.
The finish on Venetian plaster is
basically entirely waterproof, and
is considered as being durable
enough for such rooms as kitchens
and bathrooms as well as high
traffic areas. The surface of
Venetian plaster can be easily
cleaned with soap and water, and
imperfections such as nicks can be
easily repaired. As well, this form
of plaster is highly resistant to
fingerprints and soil, can be used
inside or outside, and even resists
mold, rain and frost.
Although many will opt immediately
to hire a professional to do the
job, it can be a relatively simple
task to achieve the polished and
high quality look of Venetian
plaster on your own. There is in
fact a basic four-step process
which, if followed correctly, will
turn out to be a beautiful and
elegant home improvement project.
The first step is to apply a thin
coat of the tinted Venetian trowel,
and let it dry for about four hours.
Next, apply another thin coat of the
product with a trowel. By doing this
you will be filling any voids as
well as ensuring that the wall
surface is completely and entirely
covered.
The third step is that of
burnishing, which consists of
rubbing the surface in a continuous
circular motion with sandpaper, and
following that up by using the flat
side of a steel trowel to rub the
finish. After this, you will need to
apply a top coat for durability and
protection. This is the final step
in the basic four; of course there
are more complicated and complex
guidelines for various different
Venetian plaster ideas, but this is
basically just to give a rough idea
on what needs to take place in this
sort of home improvement project.
There are also faux painting
techniques you can use with Venetian
plaster, which includes such ideas
as simple glazing, shading and
fades, and comb glazing. You should
be able to find Venetian plasters at
most home centers and paint stores,
and it is usually sold in one-gallon
cans, like paint. There is a wide
variety of colors to choose from,
and you can purchase your Venetian
plaster either already tinted, or
then there are some that require
that you or your paint dealer add
the color later on. Of course if you
stop to consider it, if you choose
the latter approach, you are left
with more options in regards to
color; it all relies on your own
personal preference.
