Remodeling: You Don’t Have to Throw Out the
Old!
When you
are ready for a change in your home or you
have just purchased your very first
“fixer-upper”, then you will want to think
about remodeling. Remodeling is great
because it allows you to take what you
already have and use the best parts of it,
as well as remove the parts that are not so
good anymore.
If
you are stepping into an older home for the
first time, you may not think it is anything
special. What you need to do is use your
imagination just a little. What would the
home look like if you replaced the windows?
If you knocked out a couple of walls, would
it open up that kitchen?
Remodeling doesn’t just have to refer to
knocking down or replacing items. It can
also include simple things, like painting
and replacing the carpets. If you have older
cabinets in the kitchen, new cabinets can
really make a difference in the whole layout
of the room.
If
your bathroom needs to be updated, think
about adding a new tub liner or even replace
the entire unit. How are the cabinets in the
bathroom looking? Maybe fresh coats of paint
it all that is needed to add a little more
sparkle.
If the
house is older, chances are that the wall
treatments may be, too. If your idea of a
nice wall is not the groovy peach wallpaper
that your grandparents used, don’t worry!
There are many ways to fix that problem. You
will want to try to remove the wallpaper
before you do anything else to the wall.
After
that, you will want to decide if you want to
replace wallpaper or if you want to paint
the walls. Something else to consider is
whether or not you want to add in some new
trim or crown molding. Both can really
accent your new walls and make them seem a
little classier. Crown molding can be store
bought or you can hire a carpenter to create
your own unique crown molding right on
site.
Another way to update an older home is to
replace appliances. If the home has those
old stoves and refrigerators, then they
alone are probably making the kitchen look
pretty updated. You can find some great
deals to save you money Online. You can also
search your local hardware/appliance
merchants to find great deals. Of course,
you will most likely want the appliance to
match each other.
If you
don’t want to spend the money replacing
cabinets, you can always think about
staining or painting them. You can repaint
or re-stain them and make them look like a
completely new set of cabinets! You can also
remove and replace the hardware to match the
décor that you have created, as well.
Remodeling doesn’t always have to be focused
entirely on the inside of a home. Often, the
home’s landscaping could use a little help,
too. Is there a deck that needs to be
repainted or stained? Do you have railing
that is about to fall? Just take it off and
repaint the deck and it will be like new
again! Plant a few shrubs and flowers and
you will also find your yard shaping up
nicely.
The
biggest focal point of the outside view of
the home is the home itself. Do you have
pretty, well-kept siding? Is the wood
beginning to rot? Has the paint faded? All
of these problems can really impact the look
of your home. Most of them can be easily
repaired and your home can look brand new
again!
