Wood Prepping
|
 |
Before you paint your cabinets, it
is important to make sure they're
clean and repaired. Failing to do
this can lead to a large number of
problems. The first thing you will
want to do is make sure you have a
sawhorse. They can be made very
easily. You will want to use two
pairs of sawhorse brackets, one for
each sawhorse. Both sawhorses will
need to have four 2x4 legs. You will
next want to cut the necessary
length, and the 2x4 part should be
no longer then three feet long.
Now you will want to turn your
attention to the bracket. Each leg
must be placed into the bottom of
the lower part of the jowl. The 2x4
cross part should be placed between
the ears. If you look at the
forehead, you should see a swivel
point. This allows the sawhorse to
be folded and hung on the wall of
your garage. There should also be
holes available to nail brackets
into the 2x4 cross piece. It is best
to use screws so that the legs can
easily be replaced once you're
finished. If you have two 2x4s which
are eight feet in length, this
should give you a good area to work
in. This will also allow you to
setup multiple kitchen cabinets
which you can work on
simultaneously.
It is not necessary to buy expensive
2x4s. You can buy the cheapest ones
available. The next thing you will
want to do is mark the doors. This
can be done using masking tape, and
you will want to make sure you know
what door fits with which opening.
Trying to figure out which doors go
with the right opening can be a very
frustrating experience. After you
have done this, you will now want to
take off the kitchen cupboard doors
and hinges. You will want to place
them on the sawhorse work bench.
Then you can take off the rest of
the hardware. This hardware needs to
be cleaned with 0000 steel wool. The
inside of the kitchen cabinet doors
will generally not need to be
repainted since they don't receive
the wear the exterior parts get.
While many people keep their kitchen
cabinets clean, this alone isn't
enough. Even if your kitchen is well
ventilated, the cabinets will still
gain residue over time. Even if you
cook the best foods, this still will
not solve the problem. If you cook
fried foods which have a lot of
grease, you will find that your
cabinets will gain a large amount of
residue. The grease will cause
craters to appear in the finish, and
they will not go away no matter how
many times you clean it. There are a
number of commercial cleaners
available which can allow you to
remove these craters from the
surface of your cabinets. In
addition to getting rid of the
craters, they will also leave your
cabinets with an excellent scent.
When you purchase a cleaner, you
should make sure it is one that is
designed to be used on cabinets. The
last thing you want to do is damage
the finish. Instead of spraying it
over a large area, try using it on a
smaller surface area first. If the
older finish or paint is still
strongly connected to the surface,
it can be used as a foundation for
adding the new paint or finish. It
can also save you hours of work, and
should leave you with a surface
which is much smoother. There are a
number of methods you can use to
paint your cabinets which have been
done successfully many times.
You will first want to start by
cleaning the cabinets with TSP. Then
you will want to add a deglosser
like liquid sandpaper. Doing these
two things should remove all the
grease from the surfaces. However,
you can take it a step further by
under coating the surface with KILZ
spray. Once you've done this, you
will be ready to add the last coat.
Many of the cleaning and preparation
methods I have discussed so far are
good for wooden cabinets, but what
about cabinets that are metal? The
good news is, the methods explained
in this article will work equally
well on cabinets which are made from
metal.
However, it should be noted that
working with metal cabinets can be
very difficult if you don't take off
the old finish prior to adding the
new coat. You will also need to use
numerous coats of primer, and you
will need to sand between each coat.
As you do this on scratches and
other blemishes, they will
eventually become shiny and smooth.
The primer should only be used in
areas which need it. In addition to
this, there are a number of other
methods which can be used to redo
the cupboards for your kitchen.
There are many methods you can use
to redo your kitchen, and you will
find that some are more expensive
than others.
At the same time, it is important to
realize that the cost of repainting
your cabinets will be much cheaper
the amount you will have to pay in
order to purchase new cabinets. In
addition to this, you will have
tools which can be used for other
projects. Many people make the
mistake of buying new cabinets when
they feel that it is impossible to
repair their older ones. While this
may be necessary for people who are
busy, you may be able to save money
by having an expert do it for you,
especially if they are custom
cabinets.
Custom cabinets are expensive, and
buying new ones rather than
repairing the older ones can be a
waste of money. If you have time on
your hands, repainting your cabinets
is an investment of your time. It is
something you will want to make time
for. It is not enough to simply use
soap and water to clean your
cabinets. While this may get rid of
some of the grease, it will not give
your cabinets the look they need,
and it will not remove cracks and
blemishes from the surface. This can
only be accomplished by using
special tools and substances to
clean them.
