How To Paint Your Cabinets
If the cabinets in your kitchen are
looking a little neglected, adding a
new coat of paint can bring out the
best in them. One thing you could
use on your cabinets is a Faux
Finish. Adding a Faux Finish to your
cabinets can give them a look which
cannot be easily achieved with paint
or wallpaper. It can be added to
numerous places, and these include
metal, fabric, glass, and dry wall.
The priming of these surfaces will
vary based on the material.
If you add a Faux Finish to your
cabinet, you will be confident in
knowing it will last longer than
wallpaper. It is a material which
will not peel in environments which
are very warm. As it gets older, it
has a tendency to become more
beautiful. If you need to repair it,
this can be accomplished easily. You
can also add a coat of polyurethane
finishes. If the surface of your
cabinets have imperfections, you can
use a Faux Finish to correct them.
The characteristics of the cabinet
surface will dictate what type of
Faux Finish should be used. If your
cabinets are Formica, there are
other methods you can use to improve
the look of your cabinets.
The first thing you will need is a
primer. If you want to use a finish
which won't bring you many problems,
a pigmented shellac could be useful.
If you would rather use a primer
which is water based, you can use
Zinsser 1-2-3. This primer uses
latex and has excellent adhesion
capabilities. In addition to this,
you can also use a finish paint. An
enamel which is solvent based can
leave a glossy or semi-glossy finish
on your cabinets. If the cabinets
have a very high gloss, the latex
based finish will be much stronger.
While the latex based enamels do not
have the durability of solvent
paints, they are easy to clean up
and do not carry a strong odor. In
fact, water is all you need to clean
it.
Before you begin painting your
cabinets, you will first need to
remove the doors and drawer handles.
You will also need to have
sandpaper, a cleaner such as 409,
and a miniature bottle of spackle.
For the cracks, you will need to
have caulk. In addition to this, you
will also want to have masking tape
and paper. You will have to deal
with stains, and a bottle of lacquer
thinner is a great way to handle
this. You will also want to make
sure you have a roller frame and
paint brush. After you've acquired
all these materials, you will next
want to take off the hinges. If you
need to, a can of enamel can be used
on them as well.
You will now want to use newspapers
to cover both your floors and
countertops. After this, you will
want to clean the cabinet using Tri
Sodium Phosphate. The cabinet doors
will need to be rinsed. They must be
completely dry before you can begin
priming them. Next, you will want to
sand the surface with 120 grit
sandpaper. It is important to make
sure you take off the sanding dust
by wiping off the cabinets using a
tack rag. After this has been done,
you will now want to add a primer.
It must be done with a thin coat
which is even. Adding a primer which
is too thick can cause a lot of
programs.
