Hickory Wood Wall Unit
If you ever wanted a wall unit for
your home, either as an
entertainment center of fireplace
cabinetry, the stylish of a hickory
custom cabinet is matchless. Hickory
is a tree bearing edible nuts and
native to eastern United States and
north of Mexico, although some
species come from China, Indochina
and other Asian regions.
The wood from hickory is
exceptionally heavy, tough, hard and
strong, widely used in structural
elements requiring strength and
thinness, as well as a veneer. In
furniture, hickory was first used in
the early 19th century, and
basically in the making of club
shafts, since the wall unit concept
is relatively new.
Although tough, hickory is flexible
and valued for tool handles, bows,
drumsticks, walking canes and golf
club shafts, originally called
"hickory stick", the name is still
in use despite most of them are now
made of graphite or steel. However,
the heavier hardwood comes from
various species of hickory trees,
including Pecan, using the same for
a wall unit that is used for
baseball bats.
During the 19th century, hickory was
highly prized for wood-burning
stoves, because of the woods high
caloric content and is still in use,
but in low scale. Since those times
of the Wild West caravans to the
present, hickory wood is also a
preferred type for smoked curing
meats. Hickory had a countless
number of uses until the 1920's when
other woods and procedures
substituted it, and before woodcraft
retook it in the form of a table, a
wall unit, a chair, or a desk.
A wall unit made of hickory has a
particular delicacy and grace,
either as an entertainment center
containing a sound and/or television
system usually more than setup as a
kitchen cabinet. The advantage of
wall units is that they can be
designed and built in accordance to
the customer's specifications.
There are 15 species of hickory in
the United States, including Pecan.
However only 8 of them are
commercially used in furniture,
which is commonly available in color
ranging from white to tan, but also
from natural to reddish brown, the
distinctive tone of most wall unit
furniture crafted in hickory for
strength and durability.
Decorative hickory veneers are also
commonly used in rustic furniture,
particularly furniture and
structural parts build up in Pecan,
which has a very close grain without
much figure. This wood requires
little maintenance in order to
continue looking like the very first
day you bought your wall unit or any
other furniture or structural piece.
Like any other type of wood, the
basic care of hickory is as simple
as not placing your piece of
furniture near a heater vent. Dry
heat may cause the hickory to warp
or split if it is made from a solid
hardwood, although the nice veneered
hickory wood does not need too much
care. Protect the furniture's
finish, only needs dust regularly,
particularly if yours is a wall unit
supporting devices attracting dust.
Small film of dust creates small
scratches in wood and makes it
vulnerable to further damage
appliances placed in a wall unit,
such as TV sets, stereos, rear
projection screens, etc. Avoid
multi-purpose cleansers and use
instead a soft cloth, slightly
dampened to trap the dust, or try
those treated wipes to dust, since
they are especially designed to
collect both air and dust.
Hickory can be easily integrated to
any decoration thanks to the
unlimited variety of cabinetry,
stand-alone bookcases or just
selecting a beautiful wall unit for
your living room or any other area
of your home or workplace. Hickory
furniture can be stained and
finished or painted with details to
match existing features of the
actual room or its furniture or
architectural element.
The choice of the dense and fibrous
hickory wood adds value to your wall
unit, because its strength and
durability, making it nearly
indestructible. This is a unique
piece of furniture commonly found in
most homes across the United States,
as well as a distinctive seal in
restaurants, resorts, hotels and
private clubs throughout the world,
and particularly appreciated in
custom furniture with rustic style.
In fact, skilled craftsman continue
producing historic designs for
collectors with the look of those
early designs centuries ago, but
with the modern technology that
anyone getting a wall unit expects. |
